Fall Events
BikeFest, which runs Oct. 1-4 and is expected to draw 35,000 attendees, plans to move from the Cashman Center, its location for the past 13 years, to the downtown area. Organizers say the move will allow attendees to park their motorcycles at the rally, making the bikes a part of the event.

The Rock ’n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon in November is likely to have the largest impact on traffic, though for the shortest time. It feature's a 5K race on Saturday, Nov. 14, and three races — a marathon, half marathon and a 10K — on Sunday, Nov. 15.  The annual race series, which registered about 43,100 participants last year, is expected to prompt about 14 miles of road closures on a rolling basis, including parts of the Strip on Sunday afternoon and evening.

The Ragnar Relay, the 200-mile overnight relay Nov.6-7, will have minimal impact on the downtown area. The only closure will be on Lee Canyon Road during the relay’s Mount Charleston leg. Organizers expect to attract about 500 teams with about 6,000 runnners.

Life is Beautiful, now in its third year, provides an economic stimulus to the area but has been criticized for the noise it generates.  Life is Beautiful, which runs Sept. 25-27, shuts down about 11 blocks in the downtown area.
For residents looking to receive information about parking during the events, Brandy Stanley, the city’s parking manager, recommended checking event websites. Stanley also suggested downloading ParkMe, an app that displays information about available parking and costs.

ParkMe, download the app https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/parkme-parking/id417605484?mt=8 or visit https://www.parkme.com/las-vegas-parking and spending some time getting familiar with it before regularly using it as a tool to find open parking.

I suggest going online because the website is easier to maneuver. Once familiar with some of the features, make your way over to the phone app.

Signing up is free and easy. At the site, you’ll be asked, “Where are you going?” There are several Las Vegas entries, including the Strip and downtown. (MORE By RICHARD N. VELOTTA, LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL)

Movie theater plans to become Downtown Las Vegas' upscale neighbor

Eclipse Theaters, a movie theater set to open in Downtown Las Vegas spring 2016, is shown in this rendering made available to the Las Vegas Review-Journal Monday, Aug. 10, 2015. The eight-screen cinema will offer wait service, chef-inspired meals and reclining seats for $19. Rendering courtesy of Nic Steele

You can zipline, attend a concert and visit an art gallery in one night in downtown Las Vegas. But to catch a flick, you have to drive several miles to Henderson, North Las Vegas or Spring Valley.

That will change next spring — if plans come through.

Construction for a three-story, 72,000 square-foot cinema called Eclipse Theaters will begin by the end of the month according to Nic Steele, the project's manager. A specific groundbreaking date is still tentative, he said.

Each of the theater's eight screening rooms will have 50-90 large, extra-padded seats. The second floor will include a restaurant with a chef-inspired menu including alcohol. The third level will be reserved for VIPs and events.

There will be two types of theaters for guests: regular and premier. The latter will include wait service and full meals delivered to one's reclining seat for $19.

Tickets for a regular experience will cost about $14. Matinee tickets to similar high-end Las Vegas Valley theaters, such as the Regal in Downtown Summerlin, cost about $16.

However, the "VIP movie experience" has tried to move ahead at the corner of Third Street and Gass Avenue a few times since January 2014 with no success.

Originally set to open fall 2014, the nearly $21.1 million project was pushed back to fall 2015 and is now on its current schedule.

"Whenever you're doing a development, you want to do it right," Steele said. "It's not like opening up a corner store. There's a lot of moving pieces to the development." MORE

Burning Man 2015 takes place August 30 – September 7, 2015 in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Participants join in the effort to co-create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to art and community.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Man

(NOTE)The permit issued Friday allows Burning Man organizers to immediately start building Black Rock City, the temporary community that springs up in the desert for the annual, weeklong arts and counterculture festival. It also caps the size of this year's nine-day event at 70,000 people.

Burning Man isn’t your usual festival. It’s a city wherein almost everything that happens is created entirely by its citizens, who are active participants in the experience

In 2015 we have again invited our Regional communities and artist collectives from around the world to help create an interactive, collaborative art environment at the base of the Man, based on this year’s art theme, Carnival of Mirrors.

Ways to Participate  http://burningman.org/event/brc/participate/http://burningman.org/event/brc/participate/

People new to Burning Man often assume that it’s a regular “festival” as they’ve come to know them, a mostly passive experience where everything is planned, orchestrated and pre-packaged by the event producers, and attendees just come and enjoy the show. In fact, the exact opposite is true. The people who attend Burning Man are no mere “attendees,” but rather active participants in every sense of the word: they create the city, the interaction, the art, the performance and ultimately the “experience.” Participation is at the very core of Burning Man, and there are many ways to participate. Here are just a few to start with.

Resorts World Las Vegas is a Asian-themed resort under construction on the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. In March 2013, Boyd sold the Echelon Place 87 acres (35 ha) site to the Genting Group for $350 million. Genting announced plans to develop the site as with phase 1 construction beginning in the second half of 2014. The $4 billion first phase, including a 3,000-room hotel and a 175,000-square-foot (16,300 m2) casino, is planned to open in 2016.[2][3] Notable features will include a panda exhibit, as well as an indoor waterpark. The completed 21,847,314-square-foot (2,029,681.9 m2) project will eventually include 4 towers totaling 6583 rooms and could cost up to $7 billion. It was reported that Resorts World will have a groundbreaking ceremony on May 5, 2015.

The next time you take a gondola ride at the Venetian, take comfort that your tour is in the hands of a graduate of the Gondolier University. But it’s not exactly a four-year program — more like three weeks.
Twelve prospective gondoliers went through initial tests on Friday, jumping into the Outdoor Grand Canal and then swimming back to the gondola. Each candidate was timed on how long it took to gain control of the boat
The gondoliers spend a minimum of 40 hours navigating the gondola through the canals and mastering the safety test before they can go through final evaluations and become a graduate of Gondolier University.

Pirates have landed in Las Vegas, NV    Legend of the Pirates of the Dry Lands

People gathered at Zappos’ corporate headquarters in downtown Las Vegas to build cardboard boats in advance of the third annual Pirate Fest. The festival, which is scheduled to take place April 10-12 at Lorenzi Park, 3343 W. Washington Ave., features various events, including the cardboard regatta, where people will put their cardboard creations to the test in the water.  The Thursday event featured supplies and a space for participants to get their boats started, as well as instruction and assistance from Pirate Fest founder Rich Strelak.

This year marks our Third Annual Pirate Fest! An exciting year is shaping up!!
We have the return of Zappos Cardboard Regatta! Last year's was FUN...this year's should be a riot!!! If you haven't thought about building a boat...you should!! Its free, and we have free supplies until they are gone. It was pretty easy and a lot of fun!! (Those things REALLY floated!!)

Elvis Presley Graceland Exhibit Heading to Las Vegas
See exhibit space showcasing artifacts such as Elvis’ high school yearbooks, motorcycles and vehicles and the first suit worn onstage in his 1969 debut at the International (and that was not a jumpsuit).

Elvis was a cultural and box office force in Las Vegas, of course, performing 837 consecutive sold-out shows at the International and Las Vegas Hilton from 1969-1976. Westgate officials, beginning with company founder David Siegel, are diving into the deep end with the Presley affiliation.

The former Presley showroom is being renamed the Elvis Presley International Showroom and is due for a renovation that will return booth and table seating to the front of the venue (the move to theater seating, enacted as “Starlight Express” moved into the showroom, has long rankled fans who saw Elvis perform at the hotel).

A series of ticketed shows under the title “The Elvis Experience,” starring Martin Fontaine with 24 musicians and an eight-person choir, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays and 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. This will be the first of a rotating series of Graceland-produced live shows to play the showroom.

Officials are making it clear that these will not be productions fronted by Elvis Tribute Artists, but rather fully evolved productions celebrating Presley and his music. It sounds sort of like “Viva Elvis,” minus all Cirque-itry. It’s a noble effort even if it doesn’t have room for the guy in the rhinestone-encrusted jumpsuit over at the Elvis statue smiling and posing for photos.

Graceland will always be home, but Las Vegas is set to be Elvis Presley's home away from home yet again.
The King first played Vegas almost 59 years ago and spent months as a Sin City resident. Now, the Westgate Las Vegas hotel-casino will house a rotating display of Elvis memorabilia and artifacts rarely seen outside his famed Memphis, Tennessee, Graceland mansion.
